The Mind by Anthony Smith and published in 1984 by The Viking Press, New York. This is the hardcover edition with dust jacket and 342 pages, ISBN 0-670-47648-X (9780670476480); likely a 1st edition copy. This book is a comprehensive popular-science examination of the human brain and mind. Smith discusses brain anatomy, growth and physiology as well as consciousness, memory, the senses, left/right brain dominance, unusual abilities, brain damage and aging. The book also reflects neurological research and debates current in the 1970s and early 1980s, including brain death, psychosurgery and drugs affecting the brain. Fair to good used condition. The hardcover itself is structurally intact with moderate shelf wear. The original dust jacket is present and has rubbing, surface scratches, edge/corner wear and some small creases. There are old price/identification stickers on the jacket. The page edges show light age-related discoloration. There is a handwritten “1.00” on the front endpaper, and several areas of the preliminary pages have been heavily blacked out with marker, including a large area beneath the quotations and another along the inner margin near the foreword. There is also some ink/marking beneath the title on the title page. The pages are otherwise generally clean and the binding is intact and sound.
