Antique Computing Scale Co. of Canada Scale

Impressive antique commercial computing scale manufactured by The Computing Scale Co. of Canada Limited, Toronto, Ontario. This is a substantial early Canadian retail/store scale featuring a heavy cast-metal construction, ornate manufacturer's nameplate, mechanical weighing mechanism and original graduated price/weight computing charts. The scale retains numerous original markings and patent information. Visible patent dates include September 3, 1895 (reissued April 28, 1896) as well as January 11, 1898; April 24, 1900; May 28, 1901; and June 18, 1901. These are patent dates rather than a confirmed manufacturing date, so I would not advertise the scale as being made in 1895 without finding a serial number or other documentation. The mechanical scale does operate; however, its accuracy has not been tested or verified. It should therefore be considered a collectible/display piece unless calibrated and inspected by the buyer. It appears to retain much of its original mechanism and has an attractive aged blue/black painted finish with metal trim and period graphics. Condition is consistent with significant age and commercial use, including surface rust, oxidation, paint loss, scratches, dirt, dust and general wear. No restoration has been performed. This would make an excellent piece for a collector of antique scales, Canadian advertising and mercantile equipment, general-store memorabilia or early commercial equipment, and would also make a striking display piece in a restaurant, shop, museum, general-store display or private collection.
