Jean- Michel Basquiat Acrylic on Masonite

Updated October 15, 2026

Title: Row of Pinball Machines Technique: Mixed media on paper Measures: 24.5 x 32 cm (9.6 x 12.6 inches) Year: Undated Inscription: An inscription reading “Thiebaud” appears at the lower right. Condition: Visible light surface wear, minor handling marks and slight edge irregularities consistent with age. Condition should be confirmed through firsthand examination. Provenance: From a private California collection; reportedly acquired from a collector of postwar American art during the 1990s and subsequently retained in the same family. This history was communicated by the previous owner; supporting documentation is unavailable. Visual Description: Five brightly colored pinball machines stand in a tightly arranged row against a muted gray-green background. Saturated blues, yellows and oranges define the cabinets, while stars, triangles and geometric motifs animate their fronts. Strong contours, simplified forms and narrow bands of contrasting color create a rhythmic presentation reminiscent of commercial displays and mid-century American leisure culture, reflecting the visual language associated with Pop Art and Bay Area painting. This composition reflects stylistic elements commonly associated with major figures in modern and contemporary art.
