Daguerreotype Carpenter Saw Occupational. Dating to the late 19th century (c. 1890s), this original 5-by-5-inch mounted photograph captures a fascinating occupational portrait of a carpenter in work overalls and hat posing with a hand saw and lumber, created as a studio copy print of an earlier mid-19th-century cased daguerreotype or ambrotype (c. 1850s). Rendered as an albumen or silver gelatin print housed within an embossed textured cardstock mat surround by an unattributed commercial photographer, reproduction photos of early cased images showing trade tools hold strong appeal for collectors of occupational photography, antique woodworking tools, and early American portraiture. The piece presents in fair overall antique condition, with the photographic print retaining clear central details of the carpenter and saw despite minor surface speckling and spotting, while the surrounding cardstock mount exhibits significant age-appropriate wear, including heavy paper peeling, flaking, moisture staining, and material loss along the lower and right-hand borders.
