[LOUIS XIV.] Broadside Royal Edict, “De Par Le Roy Louis … Roy de France & de Navarre,” Castres [Southern France], 6 September 1653, folio (270 x 384 mm), woodcut royal arms at top, woodcut initial, addressing armed gatherings in the Sévennes region, banning the recruitment of soliders and stockpiling of weapons and gunpowder, also granting powers to local officials to arrest violators; old ink annotations to verso. The edict dates from the minority of Louis XIV, at the end of the Fronde of the Princes (1650-1653), the rebellion staged by the French nobility against their demotion to courtiers and against Queen Anne’s attempts to consolidate power in the Crown. Condition A few old stains, faint creasing from folds, small hole affecting one word.
