CORYAT, THOMAS. Coryat's Crudities. Hastily gobled up in five Moneths travells in France, Savoy, Italy, Rhetia commonly called Grison country, Helvetia alias Switzerland, some parts of high Gemany and the Netherlands; Newly digested in the hungry aire of Odcombe in the County of Somerset, and now dispersed to the nourishment of the travelling Members of this Kingdome. Glasgow: James MacLehose and Sons, 1905. 2 volumes. Plates (some folding). 8vo. xx, 428, [1]; [xii], 435, [1] pp. Publisher's half vellum and red cloth, gilt vignette to upper covers, spine lettered and decorated in gilt, top edge gilt. Provenance: Edward Joseph Dent (armorial bookplates). Limited edition, no. 31 of 100 copies signed by the publisher. Deluxe limited edition of a legendary oddity of English literature, originally published in 1611, being the account of his travels by foot on the continent by Thomas Coryat, something of a buffoon and jester in Prince Henry's court. Includes mock salutory verses by 55 contemporary poets, including Ben Johnson, and John Donne. Condition Endpapers toned, some soiling to cloth, spines a bit toned.
