Provenance: Theodore Watts (ownership inscription, pencil annotations throughout); A.C. Swinburne (pencil annotations); Jerome Kern (book label; his sale, Anderson Galleries, January 1929, lot 1275). With extensive annotations by the English literary critic Theodore Watts as well as numerous barbed comments by Swinburne, including, on the title page beneath author's name, "Poor fool & knave, I have no part in my heart / that's sorry yet for thee. A.C.S.", and, next to a passage on p 103: "This is nonsense & dirt. ACS." Condition: Lacking front free endpaper, half of table of contents leaf missing, hinges cracked, corners bumped.
