NO SHIPPING ~ LOCAL PICKUP ONLY > A large 36" x 42" framed Illinois Central Railroad promotional poster for McCOMB, MISSISSIPPI and the all-Pullman PANAMA LIMITED, mounted beneath acrylic on a rigid backing board and enclosed within a narrow gold-patina sectional metal channel frame. Likely of recent production, this poster recreates the visual language of mid-century Illinois Central passenger advertising and specifically promotes McCOMB MISSISSIPPI ~ ON THE ALL-PULLMAN PANAMA LIMITED. This example is offered as a decorative element rather than represented as an original period advertising poster. The design places McCOMB in oversized cream lettering across the upper field, followed by MISSISSIPPI and the red inscription ON THE ALL-PULLMAN PANAMA LIMITED. Across the bottom, a bold black panel reads ILLINOIS CENTRAL ~ The MAIN LINE of MID-AMERICA, using one of the railroad’s best-known promotional slogans. The central image presents the Panama Limited as a sleek diesel streamliner in Illinois Central’s distinctive chocolate brown, red-orange and yellow passenger colors. The locomotive is shown from a low three-quarter perspective, emphasizing the rounded streamlined nose, paired headlamps, Illinois Central diamond emblem and long train stretching into the distance. The sweeping yellow striping, warm red lower body and dark upper surfaces create a particularly strong example of the streamlined railroad aesthetic associated with the 1940s and 1950s. The Panama Limited was Illinois Central’s flagship passenger train between Chicago and New Orleans. Introduced in 1911, it became one of the railroad’s most prestigious named trains and was transformed into streamlined service in 1942. The train was marketed around luxury, speed and first-class Pullman travel, with sleeping accommodations, lounges, dining service and richly appointed interiors. The wording ALL-PULLMAN was an important distinction. The Panama Limited operated for a period as a premium train carrying Pullman sleeping and parlor-car passengers rather than conventional coach traffic. Its consist included roomettes, double bedrooms, lounge service, dining facilities and other first-class accommodations, reinforcing its reputation as one of Illinois Central’s premier long-distance passenger trains. McComb held particular importance within the Illinois Central system. The city developed around major railroad operations and facilities, and generations of local employment and commerce were tied directly to the railroad. The Panama Limited was among the best-known passenger trains serving McComb on the principal route between New Orleans and Chicago. The poster therefore has especially strong regional appeal, combining one of Illinois Central’s most celebrated passenger trains with the prominent destination reference McCOMB MISSISSIPPI. The image functions both as railroad-themed wall decor and as a locally significant decorative piece connected to McComb’s longstanding railroad history.
