19th Century Chinese Folding Hand Embordered Hand Fan housed inside its original decorated lacquer storage case. The fan is a Chinese Canton export brisé / folding fan, featuring a hand-painted leaf and delicately carved bone or ivory guards. The Leaf: Hand-painted on paper or fine silk with traditional Cantonese motifs, including flowers, foliage, and colorful birds (likely a pheasant or crane). Guards & Sticks: The outer guards show characteristic pierced relief carving featuring small medallions filled with floral or figural patterns. The Loop: A metal loop at the base holds a thick, original off-white silk tassel. The Reverse side of the fan - The Scene: It depicts a traditional Chinese narrative scene featuring figures (courtly ladies or officials) set against a backdrop of classic architecture, pavilions, and willow trees. Condition Observations The Leaf: There is light fraying and minor separation along the top edge folds, which is very common for paper or silk of this age. The Sticks: The inner structural sticks appear intact without major visible breaks, though they show natural patination and aging.
