Argentine Model 1891 Mauser Sword Bayonet

An Argentine Model 1891 sword bayonet with its steel scabbard. The ricasso is stamped WEYERSBERG KIRSCHBAUM and Co SOLINGEN, the crossguard carries the number 27 and the ferrule shows a small circled W inspection mark. The scabbard is numbered E 4793 at the throat. Argentina adopted the Mauser Modelo Argentino 1891 rifle in 7.65 by 53, built in Berlin by Ludwig Loewe and later DWM, and this bayonet was made in Solingen to go with it. The pattern carries a blade of about sixteen inches with a single fuller, a hooked quillon and a muzzle ring. Great numbers came to the United States as surplus in the 1950s and 1960s and many had the Argentine crest polished off before sale. No crest is visible here. Condition is good. The blade is bright with scattered staining and light pitting near the ricasso and along the fuller, the point and edge are intact and the scabbard wears a heavy brown patina with surface rust. Authenticity and function have not been verified by Crawford Auction Service. Estimated Value: $60 to $100 based on comparable recent sales. Sold as-is.
