Title: Seated Woman in a Red and Blue Hat Technique: Oil on canvas Measures: 16 x 12 inches Year: Undated Condition: Good overall condition. The painted surface presents strong coloration, visible brushwork, and layered applications of pigment throughout. Minor surface wear and handling marks consistent with age and display may be present. The canvas appears stable and display-ready, retaining its vivid palette and strong graphic impact. Presented in a light wood-tone frame showing minor age-related wear. Provenance: Private American collection. According to verbal provenance supplied by the consignor, the work was acquired with the contents of a residence in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, around 1958. Supporting documentation from that transaction is unavailable. Visual Description: This vertically oriented interior portrait depicts a seated woman wearing a broad-brimmed red and blue hat, her figure constructed through simplified, angular forms and emphatic dark contours. The sitter occupies a high-backed chair with her arms folded across her torso and one leg crossed over the other, creating a compact, strongly structured composition. Her face is rendered through deliberately distorted and asymmetrical features, including differently articulated eyes, an elongated nose, and contrasting planes of gray, green, pink, and blue. A saturated interior of green, red, ochre, orange, and turquoise surrounds the figure, while a rectangular window-like element and a sharply articulated plant provide geometric and organic counterpoints at right. Broad, visible brushwork and flattened spatial relationships reinforce the composition's decorative surface, while the fractured facial structure, multiple implied viewpoints, bold contouring, and reorganization of anatomical form evoke the vocabulary of Cubism and Picasso's later figurative work. This composition reflects stylistic elements commonly associated with major figures in modern and contemporary art.
