Graham Baker, oil on board, “Fishing Boat”, 8" x 10", signed lower left, framed. Provenance: From a private Nova Scotia collection. Graham “Buz” Baker is a prominent Nova Scotian marine artist whose career has focused on the distinctive coastal landscape and maritime heritage of Atlantic Canada. Born in Halifax, Baker studied under noted Nova Scotian artist John Cook and held his first solo exhibition, Facing the Sea, at the DesBrisay Museum in Bridgewater in 1974. Over a career spanning more than five decades, Baker has produced thousands of original paintings and reproductions, depicting fishing villages, working harbours, boats and the rugged shoreline of Nova Scotia. His work is characterized by a strong sense of atmosphere, detailed observation and an appreciation for the people and communities connected to the sea. Baker's paintings have been collected throughout Canada, the United States and internationally. In 2022, the DesBrisay Museum presented 50 Years Before the Easel, a retrospective celebrating his longstanding contribution to Nova Scotia's maritime art tradition.
