Julia Redgrave is a Canadian artist based in Nova Scotia, whose practice is deeply influenced by the natural world and the close observation of the landscape around her. Through her work, Redgrave explores the intricate forms, textures and patterns found in nature, often focusing on subjects that might otherwise be overlooked. Redgrave is the artist behind The Worn Doorstep Gallery in Lequille, Nova Scotia, where she presents her original works through a number of distinct collections. Her practice includes, The Lichen Collection, The Space Between, Up From Under and Hitch Hikers. A particularly distinctive aspect of Redgrave's work is her fascination with lichen, which she describes as thriving on trees, rocks and the ground around us. Her Lichen Collection transforms these small and often overlooked natural forms into highly detailed and visually engaging compositions. She works on*L'Arches acid-free rag paper using oil pastels, allowing her to capture the organic textures, subtle variations and vibrant colours of her subjects. Redgrave's work reflects a strong appreciation for the natural environment and an interest in bringing the viewer's attention to the remarkable detail found in the world immediately around us. Her paintings combine close observation with an expressive use of colour, texture and form, creating works that are both contemporary and closely connected to the landscape of Atlantic Canada. Redgrave studied at OCAD from 1973 to 1975, and has established her artistic practice in Nova Scotia.
