Frances Macdonald (b. 1945), oil on canvas, "Purple Shadows of Iona", 39.5" x 56", signed lower left, Portland Gallery (St. Jame's, London, U.K.) label on reverse (professionally framed). Provenance: From a private Nova Scotia collection. Frances Macdonald (b. 1945) is an accomplished Scottish landscape painter whose work is rooted in the dramatic coastline and islands of western Scotland. Based at Crinan in Argyll, Macdonald has developed a distinctive style characterized by vibrant colour, simplified forms and richly textured oil paint applied with a palette knife. Her paintings frequently depict Iona, Jura, Mull, Tiree and other locations along Scotland's western coast. Her work has been exhibited extensively in Scotland and London and is held in private and corporate collections internationally. Her work has also been the subject of scholarly and museum exhibitions, including Doves and Dreams: The Art of Frances Macdonald and J. Herbert McNair, presented at the Hunterian Art Gallery in Glasgow and the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool.
