Ancient Greek Warrior, From the Private Collection of Mr. John Bruckowski (1831-1900).

7*5.1cm Wt:33.5g

The agate originates from the private collection of Mr. John Bruckowski (1831-1900), a diamond specialist based in London and Zurich, acquired at auction. Mounted as a pendant in 18K gold with Etruscan-revival goldwork. The agate is intaglio-carved with a Greek hoplite-veteran warrior, a classical heroic figure from Homeric epics. Depicted with plumed Corinthian helmet, long spear, curved shield and the bearded features of an elderly warrior. It represents a quintessential Neoclassical intaglio motif, derived largely from depictions of veterans, heroes and city-state guardians on ancient Greek vases and marble sculpture. Symbolism: valour, protection, fortitude and civic honour. Warrior themes of this kind were greatly favoured by aristocratic collectors throughout the 18th-19th centuries. Emblematic of courage and self-command, such pieces were worn as protective talismans and cherished heirloom jewellery.

ALL PROPERTY IS SOLD AS IS, WHERE IS, WITH NO RETURNS OR CANCELLATIONS.

Additional photographs and condition reports may be provided upon request as a courtesy only.
