Micromosaic Butterfly Brooch-Pendant.

L:6.1cm W:3.5cm Wt:21.9g

Micromosaic is the most iconic antique jewellery technique of 19th-century Rome, Italy. Artisans cut extremely thin coloured glass strips (tesserae) into pinhead-sized fragments and hand-assemble them to form complete images. The central round panel has a white ground, upon which thousands of glass tesserae compose a colourful butterfly. The wing markings, ocelli and body details are vividly rendered with distinct layers. Handcrafted in 22K gold, it adopts Etruscan filigree and granulation techniques of Archaeological Revival jewellery. The scrollwork at the top, curved side brackets and pendant drop structure all demonstrate the consummate skill of 19th-century Italian goldsmiths. In the Victorian era, butterflies symbolised transformation, rebirth and the soul; a classic romantic motif in 19th-century jewellery, often used to convey best wishes.
