An absolute masterpiece of elite English silversmithing, boasting exceptional World War II and theatrical history. This magnificent antique solid sterling silver pitcher is modeled in the classical Roman "Askos" form, designed after the famous ancient bronze pouring vessels excavated at Pompeii. The piece exhibits monumental neoclassical artistry, showcasing a fluid asymmetrical silhouette shaped like an ancient animal skin bag. The wide rim is dramatically mounted with two beautifully modeled goats (caprides) lounging along the upper lip. The piece features an elaborately scrolled branch handle with what possibly appears to be a genuine bone or ivory insulation heat-break ring. The handle also features a winged cherub at the base. The lower rim is proudly struck with the prominent workshop name stamp: "STORR & MORTIMER". The front neck features a pristine, complete row of official British sterling hallmarks from the London Assay Office. This includes Paul Storr's individual "PS" maker's mark, the Lion Passant (certifying .925 purity), the Crowned Leopard's Head, the lowercase date letter "u", and the profile duty mark of King William IV—legally establishing its creation year as 1835 under the direct master guidance of Paul Storr. Historical Provenance: The gilded underside of the base features a beautifully crisp, hand-engraved presentation inscription reading: "To Mr. A. Lunt, in commemoration of 'There shall be no night' from the Hellenes of Great Britain." It appears that this historic artifact was presented to legendary Broadway icon Alfred Lunt during the celebrated 1943 London West End run of Robert E. Sherwood's Pulitzer Prize-winning anti-totalitarian play, There Shall Be No Night. While the original 1940 Broadway script was set in Finland, Sherwood specifically rewrote the setting to Greece for the wartime London production at the Aldwych Theatre. This premier 1835 Storr piece was commissioned and gifted directly to Lunt by the Greek community in exile ("The Hellenes of Great Britain") to honor his powerful direction and performance championing the Greek resistance against Axis forces. An irreplaceable, top-tier investment artifact combining Paul Storr craftsmanship, classical antiquities revival, and mid-century global history. Item measures 5" H x 5" L along the profile x 2.5" W across the front. Total weight: 10.955 ozt. View our full catalog of quality items up for auction at: POGAuctions.com.
