Wingate, Sir James Lawton (Scottish, 1846-1924). Sunset. Oil on canvas. ND. Faint signature lower right, plus a paper tag verso. In a gilt and wood frame. Sir James Lawton Wingate was a Scottish landscape painter whose evocative depictions of the countryside earned him a prominent place in Scottish art. Trained in part at the Glasgow School of Art, he achieved widespread recognition later in life, serving as President of the Royal Scottish Academy and receiving a knighthood in 1919.
