S.S. Andrea Doria shipwreck salvaged $1 Silver Certificate (Series 1935E). Dimension:9 1/4"x 5 3/4". The text printed inside the case reads:"Salvaged by The Doria Project from Italian Line flagship SS Andrea Doria, sunk July 26, 1956 in the Atlantic." Directly below the text are the hand-signed autographs of Peter Gimbel (the legendary marine explorer who led the 1981 expedition to recover the ship's Banco di Roma safe) and his wife, Elga Andersen (the famous diver and actress who assisted in the preservation of the delicate notes). The luxury ocean liner S.S. Andrea Doria tragically sank off the coast of Nantucket after a collision with the S.S. Stockholm in 1956. In 1981, Peter Gimbel successfully salvaged the ship's submerged first-class safe. When the safe was finally opened live on television in August 1984, thousands of water-logged U.S. silver certificates and Italian lire notes were recovered. Because the notes spent 25 years submerged in salt water, they showcase a distinct "shipwreck effect," featuring unique water stains, fading, and edge degradation
