A finely conceived and powerfully carved Inuit sculpture by Albert Qayutinnuaq of Taloyoak, titled Spirit Faces and dated 1994. Hand carved in dark, gently variegated serpentine stone, the work presents an elegant S shaped profile with a rising fin like crest that resolves into a field of deeply incised motifs. Turning the piece reveals Qayutinnuaq’s signature dual imagery of spirit personae: one face defined by a protective almond shaped surround and a constellation of drilled points with two light circular inlays, the other an abstracted visage emerging in low relief along the opposite terminal. The top surface is animated by repeated notches and ridges that read as feathering or radiating energy, while the underside and flanks show expert toolwork, controlled abrasion, and the subtle sheen that collectors prize in Taloyoak serpentine. The composition is compact yet monumental, inviting the hand and the eye from every angle and demonstrating the artist’s sensitivity to the natural veining and inclusions of the stone. Included is the original Government of Canada authenticity certificate completed in the artist’s name with community Taloyoak, title Spirit Faces, and date 1994, inventory number 90054.
Dimensions 6 in length x 2.5 in width x 3 in height.
Condition presents as excellent with minor natural inclusions and light handling marks consistent with age and medium.
This is a museum quality example of contemporary Inuit carving from the Kitikmeot region, merging spiritual imagery with modern abstraction and offering superb display presence for the serious collector of Canadian Aboriginal and Inuit art, serpentine carvings, and Taloyoak sculpture
90054
