An outstanding piece of Canadian Olympic hockey memorabilia commemorating one of the most celebrated moments in the nation’s sporting history, this substantial Roots Canada wool and leather varsity jacket honors the Canadian men’s and women’s hockey teams and their extraordinary double-gold performance at the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympic Winter Games.

Canada’s triumph in Salt Lake City occupies a particularly important place in hockey history. The Canadian women defeated the United States 3-2 to capture Olympic gold, while the Canadian men defeated the United States 5-2 in the gold-medal final, bringing Canada its first men’s Olympic hockey championship since Oslo 1952 and ending an historic 50-year wait for the return of men’s Olympic hockey gold. Few modern Olympic moments resonated more powerfully with Canadian hockey culture, giving memorabilia specifically commemorating the 2002 championships enduring appeal among collectors of Team Canada, Olympic Games and international hockey material.

Produced by Roots Canada in classic varsity-jacket form, the present example features a black wool-blend body accented with black leather trim, gold piping, striped rib-knit collar, cuffs and waistband, snap-front closure and quilted interior lining. The front is embroidered with the Roots script logo and an elaborate Canadian Olympic Hockey Teams 2002 maple-leaf emblem reading “Gold Medal Champions - Salt Lake City.”

The reverse is dominated by an exceptionally bold embroidered championship crest incorporating a maple leaf, crossed hockey sticks, Olympic rings, hockey puck and “Canadian Olympic Hockey Teams 2002” insignia, above the prominent designation “Gold Medal Champions - Salt Lake City.” The scale and graphic strength of this decoration give the jacket considerable display presence even when presented solely as a collectible rather than worn.

Particularly desirable are the extensive embroidered sleeve applications documenting Canadian Olympic hockey history. One sleeve records Canada’s men’s Olympic gold-medal victories at Antwerp 1920, Chamonix 1924, St. Moritz 1928, Lake Placid 1932, St. Moritz 1948, Oslo 1952 and Salt Lake City 2002. The opposing sleeve incorporates Canadian flag imagery, separate “Men’s Gold Medal Champions” and “Women’s Gold Medal Champions” banners, and a prominent “50th Anniversary Olympic Gold Medal Hockey Champions 1952-2002” emblem, visually connecting the landmark Salt Lake City victory with Canada’s previous men’s Olympic gold in Oslo.

The interior retains its woven Roots Canada 2002 Salt Lake City label and original composition tag identifying the body as 75% wool, 20% nylon and 5% other fibre, with 100% acetate lining and 100% leather trim. Marked “Made in Canada” and size L/G. Canadian manufacture is a particularly attractive attribute for collectors seeking period Roots Olympic apparel, while the adult Large sizing broadens both display and wearable appeal.

Roots became closel
