A large, richly textured and visually compelling signed limited-edition lithograph by distinguished Spanish Catalan artist Àlvar Suñol Muñoz-Ramos, widely known simply as Alvar, centered upon one of the artist's most resonant recurring themes - music and the human figure.

The composition presents a solitary seated cellist emerging from an intricate architectural interior, the elongated cello forming a powerful vertical axis through the center of the image. The musician's stylized, mask-like face is constructed through overlapping passages of translucent color and shadow, while the instrument, figure and surrounding interior merge into a sophisticated interplay of geometry, pattern and pictorial space. Beyond the figure appear fragmented architectural forms, a darkened landscape, branching red trees and richly patterned bands that give the work a distinctly theatrical, almost dreamlike spatial complexity.

Alvar orchestrates the composition through an especially attractive palette of deep burgundy, black, burnt sienna, ochre, muted blue, charcoal and earthen brown. The darker upper passages provide dramatic contrast to the luminous cream-colored lower field, where the cello's rounded body and the artist's characteristic geometric patterning introduce warmth, rhythm and visual movement. A repeating diamond-patterned section at the lower edge acts almost as a decorative stage upon which the figure is suspended.

Of particular distinction is the extensive blind embossing incorporated into the sheet. Raised, uninked decorative motifs form an elaborate relief border around substantial portions of the composition, including repeating fan-like, scalloped and architectural forms. These deeply impressed elements give the paper a pronounced sculptural quality and create changing highlights and shadows as the work is viewed under different lighting conditions. The integration of lithographic color with relief embossing is central to the visual sophistication of the sheet and materially enhances its presence beyond that of a conventional flat print.

The subject is particularly well suited to Alvar's artistic vocabulary. Musical instruments, musicians, architectural interiors, patterned surfaces, windows and carefully structured geometric passages recur throughout his graphic work, allowing him to explore the relationship between human presence, memory, rhythm and interior space. Alvar began producing original lithographs in Paris in the early 1960s and subsequently devoted a significant portion of his career to printmaking, establishing lithography as one of the principal media through which his highly recognizable figurative language became internationally collected.

The present impression is individually numbered 167/185 in pencil at lower left and hand signed "Alvar" in pencil at lower right. Both inscriptions are clearly visible in the accompanying detailed photographs. The finite edition of 185 is consistent with document
