Howard Terpning (American, b. 1927), Captured from General Crook's Command, 2005. An imposing and highly collectible signed limited-edition giclée on canvas, hand-numbered 85/175, presenting one of Terpning's characteristically powerful interpretations of the historic American West. Measuring an impressive 31" x 51" before framing, this panoramic composition combines dramatic equestrian movement, Apache subject matter, rugged Southwestern terrain and the artist's celebrated narrative realism in a format of exceptional visual presence. The edition was published in November 2005 in a signed and numbered issue of only 175 canvases at this 31" x 51" image size.<br><br>The composition portrays Apache riders moving urgently through the landscape with captured supplies and a laden pack horse, a subject connected to the military campaigns of General George Crook in the American Southwest during the late nineteenth century. Terpning stages the scene with remarkable cinematic immediacy: the riders advance across a rocky rise, horses overlap in a sweeping diagonal progression, and the combination of dust, light, motion and sharply observed equipment creates an atmosphere of tension and momentum. Published commentary accompanying the edition identifies the narrative as an Apache raid for military provisions during the campaigns that continued through the period preceding Geronimo's surrender in 1886.<br><br>Terpning is internationally recognized as one of the foremost painters of the American West and Native American subjects of his generation.
