Important lithograph, The Head of an Auschwitz Prisoner, 1955, signed in the plate, 10 1/2 x 8 inches at sight. Provenance: Awarded to the consignor's father in 1955 at an evening event in Paris on the bank of La Seine commemorating the 10th anniversary of the liberation of the Aushwitz concentration camp. The father of the consignor, who was a doctor, was interned at the deathcamp. During his incarceration, he and fellow inmates built a makeshift hospital under one of the baracks. There, under the nose of the German guards, the doctor went on to save hundreds of lives, using his skills as a physician. After liberation in 1955, he was awarded this lithograph by the Auschwitz Committee for his selfless bravery in saving his fellow prisoners. Picasso created this image after a visit to the camp that reputedly brought him to tears.
