U.S. Army Medical Staff officer's dress sword ( "38" L, U.S. Medical Staff"), acid-etched steel blade inscribed in script "U.S. Medical Staff" with foliate scrollwork panels, blade also marked "AMES MFG. CO., CHICOPEE, MASS" (the noted 19th-century American edged-weapon manufacturer), gilt-brass hilt with cast eagle-decorated grip, scrolled quillon guard, and a shield-form langet monogrammed "M.S." over a stippled star field, in a matching gilt-brass scabbard with cast relief panels.
