Ornate Gilt Frame. 9.5" X 11.5" site size/ Framed size 16" X 18" Historical Significance & Sitter Biography Prominent Rhode Island Lineage: Samuel Nightingale III (1782–1851) belonged to one of the foundational, elite civic families of Providence, Rhode Island. Global Maritime Merchant: Early in life, he engaged in lucrative global maritime trade, executing commercial voyages to China and the East Indies, and eventually owning several merchant shipping vessels. Industrialist & Cotton Manufacturer: As New England's economy shifted, he became a major textile industrialist, owning and operating the Georgiaville Cotton Mills in Smithfield, Rhode Island. Banking Pioneer: A cornerstone of the early Providence financial sector, he served for many years as the President of the National Exchange Bank. Historic Interring: He is buried in the elite, historic Nightingale Family Plot at the famous Swan Point Cemetery in Providence, RI.
