Large, heavy oval English sterling silver meat platter. "3084 grams "16"x20.5""). Maker: Benjamin Smith Date: London, 1799, This exceptional Georgian-era meat platter features a beautifully executed, scalloped border accented with a crisp alternating gadroon-and-shell rim. The wide rim is masterfully engraved with a personalized, impaled heraldic coat of arms. The reverse bears a full complement of clear, authentic London hallmarks, including the Lion Passant sterling guarantee, the crowned leopard's head town mark, the George III duty mark, the lowercase Roman "d" date letter for 1799, and the maker’s mark "BS" struck in a rectangular punch. This elegant dish exemplifies the heavy gauge structure and sophisticated craftsmanship demanded by the British aristocracy at the close of the eighteenth century
