(1599-1660), Spanish Painter, "Portrait of Pope Innocent X", Executed 1650 .

30*40cm
The painter made his second trip to Italy in 1650 and executed this portrait in Rome. The work depicts the Pope, who formally ascended to the papacy in 1644. "Composition" With fluid brushstrokes, the painter renders the Pope's elongated face, compressed lips and sharp, piercing eyes. The pontiff gazes down upon the viewer, revealing his inner arrogance and conceit. Though his demeanour is commanding, his hands resting upon the chair appear feeble, precisely capturing the sitter's complex psychology and depicting his fierce, ruthless character. Dominating the palette is red, evoking the solemn atmosphere inherent to religious authority. The stark colour contrast between the white liturgical robes and red mantle reinforces the figure's imposing aura. "Significance": This portrait stands among Vel??zquez's most celebrated masterpieces and is a touchstone of real?ist portraiture in European art history.

ALL PROPERTY IS SOLD AS IS, WHERE IS, WITH NO RETURNS, REFUNDS, OR CANCELLATIONS.

Condition and Authenticity:

Any statement in the catalogue, condition report, photographs, video, invoice, or other written or oral communication regarding the origin, date, age, attribution, authorship, authenticity, provenance, material, condition, or estimated selling price of any lot is a statement of opinion only.
