Patience Escalier".

26.2*21cm
Escalier was an elderly peasant farmer from a farm near Arles and a former cowboy of the Camargue region. Drawn to his traditional Proven?al peasant appearance, Van Gogh chose him as his sitter. In the painting, Escalier wears a straw hat and a blue work jacket, with sunken cheeks and a resolute expression. Van Gogh deployed bold, saturated colours ?? notably the striking contrast of vivid blue and orange ?? to create a powerful visual impact, heightening the dynamism of the composition and conveying the subject's fortitude and hard?working nature. One of the defining achievements of Van Gogh's oeuvre, this work captures both the dignity and individuality of the peasant figure, while demonstrating his revolutionary experiments with colour and form. Meyer Shapiro commented that it is ??perhaps the last realistic peasant portrait in the Western painting tradition, and arguably the only great peasant portrait.??

ALL PROPERTY IS SOLD AS IS, WHERE IS, WITH NO RETURNS, REFUNDS, OR CANCELLATIONS.

Condition and Authenticity:

Any statement in the catalogue, condition report, photographs, video, invoice, or other written or oral communication regarding the origin, date, age, attribution, authorship, authenticity, provenance, material, condition, or estimated selling price of any lot is a statement of opinion only.
