Standard 1861 National Bank Note 3¢ rose, perf 12, ungrilled. Common shade, ordinary domestic 3¢ rate. “Esq.” usually meant a professional man (lawyer, merchant, or gentleman). No prominent Civil War-era William Hodgens is tied to that exact 10th Street address in readily available records; 153 N. 10th sits in what was then a mixed residential/commercial stretch north of Center City (near today’s Northern Liberties / lower North Philadelphia). Philadelphia was the Union’s second-most important Northern city after Washington: major recruiting center, bounty-fund hub (Citizens’ Bounty Fund, 1862), largest hospitals in the North (Satterlee and Mower), shipyards, rail and financial center, and an “arsenal of the Union.” About 90,000 names appear on Philadelphia enlistment rolls. In June 1863 the city briefly feared Lee’s invasion after Gettysburg approached. This envelope is ordinary home-front correspondence into that wartime city
