1862 Connecticut civilian cover. Another 1861 3¢ rose Washington (Scott #65) on a yellow envelope to Mrs. E. D. Post, Andover, Conn. Left-edge docketing reads “Robt Champlin / 1862.” The circular date stamp is heavily smeared Andover, Connecticut (Tolland County) had an established Post family in the village center—sawmill/turning-shop operators who built distinctive Carpenter Gothic houses there in the 1850s. “Mrs. E. D. Post” fits that local family. Robert/Robt Champlin is a Connecticut name (Lebanon and nearby towns); one George N. Champlin of Stafford served in the 16th Connecticut Infantry, but the docketing more likely refers to a civilian writer of that surname. The cover itself is ordinary home-front mail, not a soldier’s letter.1862 war context1862 was the bloodiest year of the war and the year this letter traveled.
