Pedersen–designed slide-action .22 is a great find for collectors looking to go beyond the standard Model 12-A. Manufactured at Remington's Ilion, New York works between 1909 and 1936, the Model 12 line was one of the most successful pump-action rimfire rifle families of the early 20th century, and the CS designation identifies this example as the smoothbore version chambered for .22 Remington Special — built to shoot both the higher-velocity .22 Remington Special ball cartridge and .22 Remington Special shot loads, making it a versatile small-game and pest gun in its day and a notably less common find on the secondary market now. The barrel is clearly roll-marked "Remington Trade Mark — 22 REM. SPECIAL," and the receiver is stamped "MODEL 12-CS" along with the serial number and the full manufacturer's legend: "REMINGTON ARMS-UNION METALLIC CARTRIDGE CO., REMINGTON WORKS, ILION, N.Y., U.S.A." beneath the complete run of Pedersen's original slide-action patent dates — Jan. 5, 1909; Oct. 12, 1909; Mar. 8, 1910; Nov. 21, 1911; and Apr. 16, 1912 — the same foundational patents behind Remington's early pump-gun lineup. The action features a large oval loading/ejection port on the right side of the receiver, a grooved walnut slide handle, and a tubular magazine housed beneath the round barrel, with the knurled takedown knob and magazine cap at the muzzle used to break the rifle down for cleaning, storage, or transport. This rifle wears its age honestly: the once-bright blued finish has thinned to a smooth gray patina at the receiver, slide handle, and high points of the barrel, and the straight-grip walnut stock carries a collection of small handling marks and scratches earned over more than a century of use — the kind of honest, unrestored wear collectors prize as proof of an untouched original.
