itle: Totemic Figures with Bird Technique: Pastel on paper Measures: 20 x 16 inches (50.8 x 40.6 cm) Year: Undated Condition: Good condition. The sheet presents well-preserved pastel passages with clearly defined linear elements and subtle tonal transitions. Minor handling wear and light age-related toning consistent with the medium may be present. The paper appears stable and display-ready. Presented matted under glazing in a silver-tone frame showing light wear. Provenance: From a private collection in Coral Gables, Miami, Florida. According to family history, the work descended within a Chinese-Cuban family that left Cuba for the United States at the beginning of the Cuban Revolution in 1959. It subsequently remained in the family’s possession. No supporting acquisition or immigration-period records accompanied the work upon consignment. This provenance reflects the history supplied when the artwork was received for cataloging. Visual Description: This vertical composition presents a group of elongated, hybrid figures assembled through angular black lines and softly blended passages of black, ochre, beige, and red pastel. Mask-like faces, pointed limbs, skeletal forms, and a bird positioned above the principal figure create a mysterious, ritualistic atmosphere. The overlapping bodies and ambiguous combination of human, animal, and botanical elements evoke themes of transformation, spirituality, and Afro-Caribbean mythology. The imagery recalls the distinctive visual language associated with Cuban modernist Wifredo Lam, whose work combined European modernism with Afro-Cuban and Caribbean cultural references. Bears an inscription near the lower right. This composition reflects stylistic elements commonly associated with major figures in modern and contemporary art.
