Hand-Crank Butter Churn Patented April 16, 1901

This hand-crank butter churn, patented on April 16, 1901, measures approximately 24 1/2 inches tall including the feet and 14 inches wide including the side crank. The device features a steel or iron metal body with visible hand-crank mechanism,complete with a large gear and a wooden handle. The top is constructed from two fitted wooden panels with a central hole for the rotating churn paddle, which is visible inside the vessel and appears to be constructed of wood as well. The base issupported by four sturdy metal feet, and a drain or spout is located near the bottom for liquid removal. This design exemplifies turn-of-the-century dairy processing equipment used for churning cream into butter in a domestic or small dairy farm setting. The piece presents moderate surface wear and corrosion consistent with age and function. This is an exemplary piece of essential pioneer era homestead equipment.
