FRANCISCAN DESERT ROSE HAND-PAINTED OVAL DIVIDED VEGETABLE SERVING BOWL Classic Franciscan Desert Rose oval divided vegetable bowl, the two-compartment serving piece that anchors a Desert Rose table. Warm cream earthenware body with the hand-painted pink wild roses, green leaves, and brown branch border that made this the best-selling American dinnerware pattern of the twentieth century, finished with the signature scalloped rim and hand-painted green edge trim. The center divider runs the full width so two vegetables, dressings, or sides stay separate, and the generous oval footprint makes it equally useful for holiday service or everyday family meals. Form: oval two-compartment divided vegetable bowl with a raised full-width center divider, scalloped rim, and low oval foot Measures approximately 10-1/2" to 11" long, approximately 7" to 7-1/2" wide, and approximately 2" deep per the tape-measure and profile photographs; bidders should verify dimensions from the photographs Decoration: hand-painted pink open roses and rosebuds with yellow stamens, green leaves, and a brown branch and thorn border around the rim, with a hand-painted green trim line following the scalloped edge Interior compartments are plain glazed cream, with the floral decoration carried around the rim band Attribution note Desert Rose was introduced by Gladding, McBean & Co. of Los Angeles in 1941 and produced continuously for decades; Replacements, Ltd. lists the Franciscan Desert Rose USA backstamp line as running from 1941 to 1984, and the pattern remains one of the most collected and most replaced American dinnerware patterns. The Franciscan Ceramics Archive notes that the Gladding, McBean & Co. name was removed from Franciscan backstamps following the 1962 corporate merger, with OVEN SAFE and COLOR FAST wording added in January 1963 and the Interpace stamp appearing in July 1963, so the exact mark on the underside is what dates a given piece. The pattern identification is straightforward from the hand-painted roses, branch border, and scalloped green-trimmed rim. Bid on the item as pictured. Condition Used vintage condition, sold as-is. The bowl presents very well in the photographs with bright clean color, glossy glaze, strong hand-painted decoration, and no fading of the pink or green. No chips, cracks, or repairs are visible. A few small dark specks are visible in the glaze on the interior floor, and light gray utensil marks and faint scuffing consistent with normal serving use may be present in the compartments. Light wear to the hand-painted green rim trim is typical of the pattern and should be expected.
