An early abstract oil by Cathy Senitt, painted in 1965 while the artist was still based in Rochester, New York. Executed almost entirely in a restrained range of white, silver-grey, charcoal and black, the work combines broad, atmospheric passages with more forceful gestural marks. The result is an intriguing composition that moves between abstraction and suggestions of landscape or architectural form. Artist Biography Cathy Senitt (b. 1945) was born in Rochester, New York and studied at the Rochester Institute of Technology's School of Art and Design. Government of Canada's Artists in Canada database records her as Cathy Senitt-Harbison, born in Rochester in 1945 and subsequently based in Ontario. Her own exhibition chronology records Rochester-area exhibitions in 1965–66, followed by her move to Canada in 1966. She subsequently exhibited at Toronto's Pollock Gallery from 1967–75 and received Canada Council grants in 1968, 1969 and 1972. Her exhibition history later included Expo 70 in Osaka, the Art Gallery of Ontario and numerous Canadian institutions. Her work is represented in collections including the AGO, Art Gallery of Windsor, Art Gallery of Hamilton and Canada Council Art Bank.
