John Swan (1948-2025) Watercolor on paper, c. 1992 Sight 16.5" x 27.75" Frame 26.5" x 37.25" Signed on painting bottom right, and signed 1992 on back with the address 61 Rosemont Ave, Portland, ME. Swan was born and raised in Maine and studied at the University of New Hampshire. In the 1980s, Swan was painting local rural landscapes when a fly-fishing painting appeared on the cover of Gray’s Sporting Journal, establishing sporting subjects as an important part of his work. Equally accomplished in watercolor and oil, Swan painted from firsthand experience throughout Maine, Canada, and destinations such as the Bahamas. He was named Atlantic Salmon Federation Artist of the Year three times, Ducks Unlimited International Artist of the Year in 1987, and Bonefish & Tarpon Trust Artist of the Year in 2017. His work was the subject of one-man exhibitions at the American Museum of Fly Fishing, King Gallery, and Stephen O’Brien Jr. Fine Arts Gallery. Swan also illustrated numerous books, including Joseph Bates Jr.’s Atlantic Salmon Fishing and Thomas McGuane’s Live Water.Note: Large paintings in this auction will need to be safely packed and shipped with an outside shipper.
