Title: Figure and Constellations Technique: Watercolor on paper Measures: 11 x 8 inches (27.9 x 20.3 cm) Year: Circa mid-20th century Surrealist period Condition: Good condition. The sheet presents vivid watercolor passages, fluid black linework, and scattered graphic elements throughout. Minor toning, creasing, surface wear, and handling marks consistent with age may be present. The paper appears stable and display-ready, retaining its spontaneous character and overall presentation. Provenance: Private collection, South Carolina. By family repute, the work was inherited with a collection of French decorative art and paintings assembled by the owner’s grandparents during European travels in the 1950s and 1960s. Precise acquisition details were not preserved. The above provenance reflects the ownership history that accompanied the artwork at the time it was received for cataloging. Visual Description: This playful abstract composition brings together a loosely rendered black figure, floating circular forms, starbursts, and vivid passages of primary color. A pale blue rectangular field anchors the central figure, whose rounded head and extended limbs are articulated through expressive black brushwork. Vertical strokes of yellow and blue rise along the left side beside a sweeping red curve, while smaller accents of green, orange, pink, and blue appear throughout the sheet. Fine linear grids, scattered circles, and constellation-like symbols create a lively balance between gesture, geometry, and imagined celestial imagery. Bears an inscription reading “Miró” near the lower right. This composition reflects stylistic elements commonly associated with major figures in modern and contemporary art.
