Title: Farmhouses Beyond the Wheat Field Technique: Oil on canvas Measures: 12 x 12 inches (30.5 x 30.5 cm) Year: Circa late-19th century Post-Impressionist period Condition: Good condition. The surface presents substantial textured pigment application, visible impasto, and energetic directional brushwork throughout. Minor surface wear and handling marks consistent with age may be present. The canvas appears stable and display-ready, retaining its expressive coloration and overall visual presentation. Presented framed. Provenance: From a private collection in Massachusetts. According to family history, the painting hung for decades in an older residence before being placed into storage during renovations in 1987. No additional records accompanied the work upon consignment. The above provenance reflects the ownership history that accompanied the artwork at the time it was received for cataloging. Visual Description: This expressive rural landscape depicts a sweeping wheat field crossed by a curving blue-gray path leading toward a group of modest farmhouses. A large, dramatically twisting tree occupies the right foreground, its substantial trunk rising against a sky filled with energetic green, yellow, blue, and cream strokes. The surrounding field is articulated through dense directional passages of ochre, green, gold, burgundy, and blue, creating a strong sense of movement across the terrain. Dark outlines around the houses, vegetation, and tree reinforce the composition’s structure while emphasizing its vivid Post-Impressionist character. Bears a vertical inscription reading “Vincent” near the lower left. This composition reflects stylistic elements commonly associated with major figures in modern and contemporary art.
