Unique piece of ornamental art, perfect for vintage wall display. What is featured is a recreation of William Hogarth’s 1740 “Portrait of Captain Thomas Coram” equally done in oil painting similar to the original work. Fully textured in great design, the portrait features Captain Thomas Coram seated with nautical items around him. The original painting is currently located in the Foundling Museum in London and is of high importance as it is the first full-length, grand-scale portrait to honor a “self-made” middle-class citizen, as usually these works were reserved for royalty. This portrait was completed as William Hogarth wanted to give this honor to his friend Thomas Coram at the age of 72. Coram was a sea captain and a shipbuilder foremost, but also, he worked on establishing a hospital for abandoned children. The original work was donated to the Foundling Hospital in 1739, coinciding with its granting of its Royal Charter. William Hogarth (1697-1764) was a pioneering English painter, engraver, and social critic, infamously known for transforming British art by shifting its focus from the idealist aristocracy to the grittier, and sometimes humorous realities of the 18th century London citizen’s life. He is widely considered the father of the modern political cartoon and the comic strip. Set within an ornate wooden frame, the overall piece measures 43” H x 31” W with the interior piece measuring approx. 36” H x 25.5” W. Frame might have some subtle wear but painting overall is in great condition, showcasing exceptionally well.
