Classic Early 1920s Erector Set

Excellent selection of a classic Erector Set from what appears to be from the early 1920s. Known as “The World’s Greatest Construction Toy”, these sets were designed to allow young builders the ability to create architectural and mechanical models. These sets consisted of high-quality steel girders, plates, pulleys, gears, and a variety of nuts and bolts. Additionally, the biggest selling point often was the Electric Motor which had the potential to give your creations “life” with real mechanical function and movement. Erector Sets were first patented by Alfred Carlton (A.C.) Gilbert in 1913. This set appears to be distinctly part of the brand’s “Pre-Classic Era” that spanned from 1919–1923. This era represents the peak of the original part design, characterized by dark-stained wooden chests, multi-color silver/gold/red decals, and flat steel girders. This time was widely considered the “Golden Age” of the original Erector design, transforming the product from basic building kit into a premium, highly coveted educational status symbol. This set is in great shape for its age, with the overall set housed in an extremely early era wooden box with brand stenciling on top. The interior of the box showcases two levels, with a top tray with smaller pieces and the bottom section holding larger pieces. Original elements like the Erector motors still retain their original box and while it’s not part of the original set, a grouping of washers are housed in a medicine tin in what could be assumed to keep them organized at the time. The other final bonus is that much of the original ephemera is included with the set.
