R Serial # NSN. 9x57mm Mauser caliber bolt action sporting rifle with a 27” solid rib barrel. The bore is very good to excellent, mostly clean with strong rifling with some light fouling. V. Chr. Schilling (Valentin Christoph Schilling) was a well-known maker of high-quality firearms located in Suhl, Germany. Established in 1816, they were prominent manufacturers of military arms and high-quality sporting rifles. During World War I, the firm participated in a Consortium (along with J.P. Sauer and C.G. Haenel) to manufacture Gewehr 98 military rifles for the German government. After the war, the firm used surplus receivers to make sporting rifles. The rifle features a ribbed barrel, double set triggers, and a case-hardened receiver, bolt and floor plate/trigger guard. The blued metal finish on the barrel is in very good condition showing light muzzle wear with scattered fine scratches. The engraved case-hardened receiver and the bolt body show good case color. The bolt handle shows worn case colors. The engraved floor plate/trigger guard shows faded case colors. Ramp front sight with a folding leaf rear sight. The checkered walnut sporter stock with a case-hardened grip cap is in very good to excellent condition showing little wear with a few light marks. European style swivels. Steel butt plate. The action works fine. Includes 15 boxes of 9mm Mauser ammunition (Mixed Kynoch, RWS and DWM). C&R.
