Dorothy Geneva Simmons Original Portrait. The work depicts a young mother holding an infant in a domestic interior with a vase of flowers and a carved rooster. Signed Simmons lower left. The style is reminiscent of the quiet figurative realism that Dorothy Geneva Simmons (later Dorothy Simmons Skelton) was known for during the 1930s and 1940s, before her post-war career in Germany and museum work. Dorothy Geneva Simmons was an artist trained at UC Berkeley who later served with the Monuments, Fine Arts and Archives (Monuments Men) program after World War II. The canvas appears to be an older linen or cotton duck with natural oxidation. The paint surface shows age-appropriate craquelure and oxidation rather than modern acrylic characteristics. The stretcher bars appear period appropriate. The tacking margins appear original. I don't see evidence that the painting has been cut down or re-lined. The composition and brushwork remain consistent across the entire surface. The pigments have naturally mellowed, particularly the whites and greens. The overall condition looks quite good considering its apparent age. The brand stamp on stretchers appears to read "ANCO BILT". This was a commercial stretcher manufacturer whose products were widely used by artists and framers in the mid-20th century. Art measures 20" x 22", frame measures 25" x 27".
