This is a hand-carved polychromed wooden circular plaque/table top depicting a Benin Royal Court scene. The king, Oba is the central figure in full royal regalia, flanked by two attendants/courtiers holding fans inspired by the 16th-19th centruy bronze plaques that depicted similar scenes. This hand-carved highly skilled work of art is hand-carved from a single piece of 22 inch diameter wood, 4 inches thick. The back shows evidence that it once may have been a small decorative table - square insert with four leg stubs. It features highly skilled carvngs of the scene itself with intricate details and still vibrant colors.On the rim piece are geometric patterns. Condition: Good overall carvinng integrity showing age and fading consistent with age. Age: 1940-1970
