This is a genuine $1000 First Mortgage Four Per Cent Gold Bond issued by the Manila Railroad Company (Southern Lines) with interest guaranteed by the government of the Philippine Islands under the authority of an Act of the U.S. Congress. It is a classic early 20th century scripophily (collectible antique stock/bond certificate) piece tied to the U.S. colonial infrastructure development i the Philippines. The Manila Railroad Company, chartered in New Jersey, was related to the London-based Manila Railway Company (1906) Limited. This bonds ornate design (red, orange, black colors lithographed intricately scrolled borders)) and vignette; classical central engraving of a steam locomotive (American style) pulling passenger cars through a tropical landscape with palm trees make this highly desirable for collectors. The addition of attached $20 semiannual coupons (uncancelled) is a strong collector plus.
