Early Overbrook Tin Front Remedies Display Cabinet

A lot of medical history with this cabinet as it features advertising for two different remedies. The oak cabinet itself dates from the late 19th century and has two tin advertising panels for "The Overbrook Allopathic Remedies" with a list of remedies and the prices. The headline on each side is "Why Be Sick". Ailments include syphilis, malaria and obesity. The tin panels were covered at some point with linen advertising for "Dr. Gilbert's True Homeopathic Cures". One linen panel remains over top on one side and the linen panel was removed from the other side but remains with the cabinet. The linen advertising uses the word "cure" which was disallowed when the FDA was created in 1906. The word allopathic refers to modern western medicine that treats by producing effects opposite to the disease itself. Since syphilis is listed, the cure might have been abstinence in a pill form. 24"H x 17 1/4"D x 7 3/4"D Wear to litho on visible tin front. Linen poster that was removed with creases, holes and losses. Linen side of cabinet with staining and wear. Strips of wood on the panel fronts added to decrease surface size and fit the linen posters.
