Henry John , RCA, 1858-1928, portrait painter best known for his genre scenes of everyday Scottish life. Here is a nostalgic Scottish interior scene with a grandmotherly figure reading a letter to her husband, who sits beside her, cone hearing earpiece in hand, while the cat looks on attentively, all in front of a glowing fire in a stone hearth, signed "H.J. Dobson RCA" lower right, very good condition, no restoration noted. 37"W x 33"H frame size. 29.5"W x 25.5"H image size. Purchased from Henry Dobson Antiques, Plattsville, Ontario for $4,950 in the 1990s.
