Attributed to John Sala (1819-1882), Mennonite cabinet maker and farmer who lived and worked in Conemaugh Township. Dovetailed blanket chest with typical shaped apron indicative of Soap Hollow chests and interior till. Stenciled "F K M" and "1858" with additional stenciling around the inlaid escutcheon, floral stenciling across the front of the chest and the facings of the feet. A documented chest of drawers dated 1857 with the same initials and pictured in Charles Muller's book on Soap Hollow is included in this sale. That chest of drawers is signed by John Sala. If it is the same person, tradition holds this was made for Frany Kauffman. The blanket chest and chest of drawers were purchased separately by the consignor. Note with this blanket chest indicates it was in the collection of Mr. and Mrs. Paul F Baer. 22"H x 40"W x 17"D Original paint and finish. Paint wear across top of lid and feet, scratch left of center and not effecting the stencil. Repaired break in front right foot. Hinges have been moved.
