The Antietam Furnace, located near Mt. Aetna in Washington County, MD was founded in 1761 and was the earliest blast furnace in Western Maryland. This stove plate is marked "Dancket Dem Hern Dem" in German which translates to "Give Thanks To The Lord". The initials below are "WJ", "WB", "BH" and "AD". The first three names are known, William James, William Buchanan and Barnabas Hughes. Rare survivor. Extensive archaeological study was done on the site starting in the 1960s. 24"H x 25 1/2"W Age crack with loss at top, typical wear.
