Beautiful collection of three vintage Limoges-style French porcelain handbells in vivid cobalt blue, rich burgundy/magenta, and emerald green grounds, each extensively accented with bright gold-tone gilding. The bells feature central romantic pastoral vignettes depicting elegantly dressed courting couples in 18th-century attire, surrounded by scrolling gilt decoration. This type of romantic decoration is commonly described by collectors as a Fragonard-style “Courting Couple” motif, after the Rococo pastoral imagery associated with French artist Jean-Honoré Fragonard. Comparable Limoges porcelain pieces were produced with these transfer-decorated courting scenes and subsequently embellished with gilt detailing. Each bell has a traditional flared porcelain body topped by an elongated, fully gilded handle. The three different colorways make an especially attractive coordinating set. Comparable vintage Limoges bells are documented with porcelain construction, glazed colored grounds, ceramic clappers, courting-couple decoration, and extensive gold embellishment; examples attributed to Limoges Castel have also been described as having 22K gold decoration. Based on the available photograph alone, the exact Limoges manufacturer, age, and gold content of these specific three bells cannot be confirmed, as Limoges is associated with numerous French porcelain makers and decorators rather than a single manufacturer. A photograph of the underside/backstamps would allow for a much more precise attribution. An elegant trio for a collector of Limoges porcelain, French decorative arts, Fragonard-style courting scenes, or vintage bells. 3 bells total. See photos for details.
